Things That Take Time

Monday, August 2, 2010 • Mike Polo • Waiting on God

Those who plant in tears will harvest with shouts of joy.  They weep as they go to plant their seed, but they sing as they return with the harvest. Psalm 126:5-6

Sonic Drive-in fast-food establishments are quite popular in our part of the Midwest.  Just pull you car into a parking spot complete with menu, ordering device, and credit card payment technology.  Place your order with red button and speaker and in minutes your food is brought to your car window.  You are ready to eat and run (or vice versa).  What could be faster or more convenient?  Well, how about drive-through at drive-up.  Yes, some Sonics have added a drive-through window for ultra-fast-food.

It is the nature of our culture where waiting is akin to torture.  In the minds of many, immediate gratification has been unofficially added to "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness."  It is no wonder we are experiencing less of these "inalienable rights."

God does not operate by the fast-food business model.  He refuses to take orders at the drive-through window and speedily fulfill our desires.  No.  God knows that to live life effectively and fruitfully takes time.  It involves patient planting and cultivating with a long-term view to a future harvest.

We would do well to return to this farming model of how to conduct life.  We must sow quality seed via our character and conduct.  We must tend the field of life through times of personal drought and periodic storms.  And, yes, we must wait-patiently, faithfully, expectantly-for God to bring the harvest.

Too many people abhor the work and waiting that sowing requires.  It doesn't fit their preference for convenience and comfort.  It is not quick and easy.  So they choose the various drive-through options offered by the culture.  They get what they want and go and, by doing so, the satisfying nature of that which has real, lasting benefit and blessing is forfeited.

We have all been given precious seed with which to plant the fields of our days here on earth.  Some of those days are tended in tears and turmoil.  But those who patiently plant spiritual seed will someday sing as they return with the harvest.

So, while you wait, get ready to sing.
